What
Is Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a uncommon type of cancer concerning
mesothelial tissues of body organs usually lungs or abdominal.
It is often initiate by exposure to asbestos, which influence
the pleura, a sac which surrounds the lungs, the peritoneum, the
lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium, a sac that
surrounds the heart.
Explation of Asbetors
Asbestos is the name of a group of reserves that arise naturally
as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into
thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been commonly used in many
industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles,
flooring products, textiles, and insulation.
Exposure of Asbestors
If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during
the manufacturing process, they may be inhaled and can cause serious
health problems. However, there are 30-50% of patients without
any history of asbestos exposure. People who have received asbestos
exposure of as little as one or two months to very low doses are
at risk of mesothelioma cancer. Even people who wash clothes of
asbestos exposed people are at risk. A person exposed to asbestos
could develop mesothelioma after 50 years of exposure.
Mesothelioma Symtptoms
Mesothelioma is an enormously cruel and permanent
cancer which infects the membrane surrounding most internal organs.
In many cases mesothelioma is discovered by accident when patients
are looking into these symptoms. Other symptoms of pleural mesothelioma
include:
Chest Pain, Chronic coughing that worsens over time, Shortness
of breath, Coughing up blood, Wheezing, Lung infection, Loss of
appetite and weight loss.
Mesothelioma Treatment
Treatment for mesothelioma depends on the location of the cancer,
the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health.
Standard treatment includes following treatments.
Mesothelioma Treatment By Surgery
The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen
and some of the tissue around it. For pleural mesothelioma,
a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy.
Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that
helps with breathing, is also removed.
Mesothelioma Treatment By Radio Therapy
Involves the use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and
shrink tumors. Radiation therapy affects the cancer cells only
in the treated area. The radiation may come from a machine (external
radiation) or from putting materials that produce radiation through
thin plastic tubes into the area where the cancer cells are found
(internal radiation therapy).
Chemotherapy Is The Use of Anticancer Drugs
To kill cancer cells throughout the body. Most drugs used to treat
mesothelioma are given by injection into a vein
(intravenous, or IV). Doctors are also studying the effectiveness
of putting chemotherapy directly into the chest or abdomen (intracavitary
chemotherapy).
High risk groups such as asbestos and construction workers must
undergo frequent check-ups to monitor any conditions leading to
mesothelioma. Because this cancer is so deadly, early diagnosis
and treatment can help prolong life, but the mortality rate is
usually 100% within five years.
